For the fourth time in five years, Blue Ridge is searching for a head football coach. The position is open after Joe Watson stepped down last week to be a coordinator at Howe.

“I knew they had some contact,” Blue Ridge athletic director Rhett Box said. “He came up and resigned. We hate to lose Coach Watson.” Box is already sifting through nearly two dozen applications and hopes to fill the vacancy quickly, perhaps as early as Monday’s school board meeting.

“We’ve had a lot of good applicants,” Box said. “I was very surprised and pleased.”

The posting of the opening states that previous head coaching experience is not a requirement, although Box is looking for a candidate with at least five years as an assistant under their belt.
